The only known painter from Pabna is Rathin Maitra, born 1913. He belongs to the famous landlord family of Shitlai which dominated cultural life of Pabna before the partion of India in 1947.
He had almost no contact with Pabna and Bangladesh, since the family left for Calcutta prior to the partition. Settled in Calcutta.Obtained his diploma from Calcutta Government Art School. He was also teacher in the same school till 1950. He was deeply influenced by Djamini Roy. Close association with poet Bishnu Dey perhaps made him know colors, vibrations, depth, density and the traquility of Bengal more than any other contemporaries.
