Heavy monsoon rainfall 18th-21st Sept.2000

Heavy monsoon rainfall Heavy rainfall on 18th ,19th and till the midday of 20th September and whole day of 21st, was a spectacular natural phenmomen here in this year.
Due to the depression formed in the bay, Pabna region like the entire country experienced about 1metre(yes one metre) of rain,.Mini monsoon probably the maximum rainfall in 24 hours in this year.Low lying lands went under water. And even the main road of the town was submerged by water for a few hours.
Day labourers and the rickshawpullers had to live these days without earnings. Their plight reached the climax when their mud huts fell down and submerged under heavy rain water.Less folk were seen in the town.At the market less transaction was made.

A five days long short film festival was planed to start on the 19th September, at the Banmali Auditorium.But was postponed due to the rainy waether. It can be mentioned here that short film festival is arranged since last two years in Pabna. English,French,Iranian,Indian,Pakistani and Russian short art films are shown for very nominal ticket price,about BDT10.

Pabna Digital Telephone Exchange inaugarated

The newly constructed 5000 lines Pabna Digital Telephone Exchange is inaugarated on the 26th September at 11am by the Telecom misnister Mr.Nasim,here he is seen talking with the Prime Minister.
The Chinese ambassador to Bangladesh was also present at the inaugaration ceremony.Here in the photo he is seen on the far right

It was in fact an historic day for the Pabnites.After decades of awaiting,now they have got at least one of their demands materealised.
No matter how old this technology in comparison with AXE Exchange is,for the Pabnites it has a very longterm effect.Now they can think of Internet via DSL(digital subscriber line), they can comminicate with the outer world at less time and definitely at greater speed.
And finally they are free from the grip of corrupted telephone billing system.

The Hindu community is preparing for Durga Puja festival

Pathatala Puja Mondop under decoration

Preperation for the Holy Durga Puja is almost complete. It is the biggest festival for the Bangla speakingHindu community in the world. Even People of other religions will be enjoying the most Solemn event of this festival,that is Bijaya Dashomi on the 8th October(Bangla 10th Ashwin),as it is a national Holiday.While the Hindu community here in Bangladesh enjoys holidays on the Mahalaya 27th September, on the Austomi 6th and Nabami on the7th October.
Here on the left you see the Pathatala Puja Mandap under decoration.

Here in Pabna a number of Puja Mandaps (where the ornamented godess Durga is placed so the visitors can pay their homage) are made- at Joy Kalibari,Bhanga Kalibari,Vadra Kalibari,Radhanagar Temple(Beside Edward Univ. College,Pabna Bazar Temple,named Sree Nrisingha Deb's Bigraha,Pathartala etc.A good number of small Mandaps in Gopalpur,Zilla Para Kalchandpara are ready.Our reporter

Our correspondent Mr.S.M.Alam is visiting every Mandap, from the beginning.As he is expert in judging the decoration of Durga,quality of Prasad, light decoration and overall performance of each Mandap,we have decided to give him the authority to find the best Mondap of the Year 2000 and in the next issue we will write about it.

International Kids Week is observed

United Nations week for the Kids started on the 27th September. Here at Pabna town different organs for the kids like Shishu Academy,Kochi-Kacha,Khelaghor have launched diverse programme for the kids.Renowned author and architect Mr.Rabiul Hussain was among the personalities to attend these programmes. Even Unicef UNICEF and Gana Unnayan Sangstha are arranging a 3 days long Mina(pronounced Meena, who is a very popular cartoon character in the subcontinent) Festival at a remote Char named Char Kurulia(Kural) beside the Padma(Ganges) ,about 15-20km SE of Pabna town. This festival comprises painting,song,recitation and sports competition for the kids. And mainly it's aim is to awakening the parents about the treatment of female child. Unfortunately like other developing countries,female child gets negligrence and less attention in the family.

A new Bangla daily from Pabna 29th Sept.2000

A new Bangla daily from Pabna From the first October 2000, Pabnites are getting a new Bangla daily named (the) Daily Durjoy. Principal Abdul Mannan Khan will be executive editor and Mr.Mostafa Satej will be editor of this newspaper.

Division Three Football Tournament:

A newly established Pabna based Cement Manufecturing Factory is sponsoring a football tournament for the under 14 years old boys on the 1st October. 10 participating teams, from Pabna,Madhpur and Ishurdi will be playing 45 matches,2 matches everyday.
