Hallo!

In a recent publication of Lonely Planet about Bangladesh, you will see a distinctive slogan-Travel Bangladesh before the tourists. In fact Bangladesh is a relatively undiscovered land to the world. Apart from the natural calamity torn and poverty stricken social life, this is a peaceful land with reverine beauties, inheriting more than 2000 years old cultural heritage. Situated between India and the South-east Asia, it is a land where you can entirely travel by boat.
This lush green land is actually composed of cluster of small villages. Bangladesh is an agrarian land. Probably the best resort for the people who are raised and live in the industrial world life.

                           Pabna Cyber Chronicle July-August 2000

The third week of July gave a real impression of tropical monsoon-dark clouds; wind from southeast direction and rain shower in intervals brought us nearer to the nature. Our very existence depends on this gift of nature. While flora and fauna of this region are nourished in monsoon.

Water level at both Jamuna and Padma increased. While coming from Dhaka, you will see the monsoon time Jamuna (Brahmaputra). This mighty great river-with her horizon wide light brown water mass under the cloudy sky presents a unique view.

People are panicked with Dengue fever

The dengue fever has spread as an epidemic in Dhaka city. Though not yet so severe, this disease is now proceeding towards the northern districts. Officially no death casualty due to dengue in Pabna is yet happend, but the risk of spreading of this disease is very high.

Peasants are growing jute.

In the outskirts of the town, long stick like green jute plants reminds us our good old days when Bangladesh enjoyed the position of largest jute grower in the world. Today, though those golden days are gone, jute fibers are still used for producing environment friendly hessian bags, rope, paper etc. And jute sticks are used as fuel for domestic purpose.

In monsoon the peasants, after collecting the fibers from jute sticks, let the wet fibers dried on the road. The special smell of fiber reminds the presence of jute in the surroundings even at nighttime, indeed a unique experience for the by-road passengers.

The garden in front of the Pabna District Board building is garneted with white Kanchan (Bauhinia variegata).
And the construction of Pabna Municipality Building is almost finished. Definitely it will be a nice looking building with the garden

The children's park is prop full in the rainless evening.

The famous Bangladeshi fashion model Bibi Russell has made a recent TV programme about the weavers from shahjadpur.Sari, Gamcha etc.of various quality and types were exhibited.

The last week of July was hot sunny

The sunny hot and sultry days of last week of July despaired the peasants.

Only a shower of rain on the 30th July evening which was far from sufficient to make the atmosphere wet and cold. But one thing is almost clear that probably the risk for flood is over for this season/year.

On 28th July nation famous writer Dr. Humayun Ahmed made a stopover in Paksey on the way towards Shelidah. He was given there a civic reception.

Pabnites can now communicate nationwide through mobile telephone. Although Pabna town is outside the Grameen telecom network,by using special rooftop antenna and amplifier, which costs around 14,000 BDT, you can use mobile telephone. However this mobile telephone cannot be carried in pocket while going outside, this is yet a good communication media in question of cost. Anywhere in Bangladesh it's BDT 6 per minute, far less than BTTB cost. It can be mentioned here that Paksey, Ishurdi, Ullahpara, Serajganj, Rajshahi are now under mobile telephone network.

The late summer days in this year are hot, sultry and of course humid. Diverse fruits like guava, grape fruit, palm has arrived in the market. And Hilsa fish, which is a part of our culinary, is now available too.

The community hygiene in Pabna town has improved, to say, under last few years. Functional Street lights, ensuring regular clean water supply, renovation of roads and drains etc. can be mentioned in the success list of the present Municipality Chairman. Although a lot many things he needs to be done immediately.
Mr. Mosharaf Hussain, the present Chairman of Pabna Municipality, as well as other Municipality Chairmen have been selected to observe the water supply and sewarage systems in Thailand and Indonesia for two weeks.
