Dear Reader,

This time we are writing to you in the midst of intermittent rain   here in Pabna region, although the whole country has suffered from less rain in this monsoon, now the real Barsha(the bangla word for rainy season) seems to have arrived.

The Start of Ashar, probably the most significant month in the Bangla calendar for the peasants, on the 15th June with heavy rainfall indicated an intensive rainy season. It continued till the end of June.
But the lack of depression formation in the Bay of Bengal presented an uncommon humid but less-rainy July.

Monsoon(Barsha) is in fact considered as the life stream in the country side of Bangladesh. The countryside Bangladesh fills with diverse activities in the month of Ashar. This is the season for sowing rice plants, yes nowadays the rice plants are sown instead of spreading the seeds randomly rice plants are sown in rows after germination.

For getting a realistic picture of monsoon time Bangladesh, hera in Pabna you can stand on the bridge near Bangla Bazaar. Facing the south you are sure to get a look on riverine Bangladesh. Green rice fields are stretched towards the horizon and small streams of water with glittering ripples are seen passing through these rice fields. Beneath the bridge a stream of Choto Padma or Small Padma(The Padma near the south part of Pabna is known in this name, and down of Goalunda is known as Bara Padma) is alive with water and transporting boats with white sails. You can reach the Choto Padma by boat or by road to Shelidah. Some big boats(Hazar Moni Nauka) and panshi boats can be seen there. On your left, about 2km away the white dome of the Shitlai Estate house is clearly visible. Many Pabnites spend their evening time by taking boat tour here.

Kadam(Anthocephalus cadamba Miq or Rubiaceae chinensis or Nauclea cadamba or Cadamba indica)
is the flower of the monsoon period. The deep and thick fragrance of this flower at rainy night fills the surroundings with a mystique atmosphere. Only those who have smelt it, can feel it.

Virus fever swept over the country
in the last 2/3 weeks of June and a big number of inhabitants in the Pabna municipal area were infected as well. Due to abrupt change in temperature at nighttime, high daytime temperature with highly humid weather caused this viral infection. Bad headache, nasal congestions and fever up to 102-103 deg F were the symptoms of this infection. In the most cases no medicine was prescribed except analgesic tablets. Usually it took at least two weeks to get around.

A Jatra Dal(Countryside drama/play groups) had performed their plays at Bangla Bazaar.
We asked if they were going to show the famous drama Sirajuddoullah on the 23rd June, anniversary of the Battle of Polashy(Plassy in English).
Instead they showed a play named Rakhal bandhu(the Shepherdic friend).

On the 29th June a spontaneous and colorful rally commemorating the achieving the Cricket test status of Bangladesh processioned round the city. Especially the school children's participance in the rally reminds us the very necessity of taking cricket seriously.

Ratha Jatra
This year's Ratha Jatra started without rain on the 3rd July. But some little rain drops on the Ulta rath day on the 10th July which could sweep the superstitious belief of coming disaster(flood?) if Ratha Jatra starts without rain.Anyway the Mela took place between the traffic point and Jai Kali Bari.
The specialty of Rather Mela is the participation of mass people-irrespective class, religion and age.
Kodma,Chanch, khagra,Batosha, nokuldana,(these are the bangla name of godis and candies of different types),Muri,Khoi(country-people's pop-corn) etc. and lot many other things for day to day use were available at Mela.Still in the late evening one could hear the sound of flute, pipes or small toys shopped by small kids going home with their parents.

The Mela was extended for one more day, that is on the 11th July it finished.
For minimizing traffic chaos proper management and coordination is required.

New TV Channels
Some new TV channels are introduced in this month in Pabna. Among them the Bangladeshi Ekushe or ETV can be mentioned. Still the conflict is going on and like the other part of the country,Pabnites are missing channels like Star Movies,Star World,National Geographic etc.

Flood Situation:
In the last issue we wrote about the satellite picture of a 2-4 km long and 17m deep ditch in the Jamuna (Brahmaputra) river bed near Sariakandi,Bogura.Near Sariakandi another river named Bangali flows parallel to Jamuna. If this ditch cause any massive breakdown of river bank, the stability of the embankments near Pabna region will be endangered and the region will be merged under at least 2m water. The Water board has taken necessary action by piling concrete blocks on the western bank of Jamuna near Sariakandi.
