In the 22nd National Badminton Competition at Chittagong, Dulali Halder, has won the Championship (under 16) in singles for the women's group. Dulali hails from Pabna, lost her father in early childhood, struggling against the hardships of day-to-day life.
A very common example of reality for the sportspersons in our country.
Our heartiest congratulations on her superb performance in the National Sports Arena.
Political Leaders, from both the opposition and ruling parties are taking preparation for the coming parliamentary election.Mr.H.M.Ershad was here on a political meeting at Town Hall on the 26th
And Mr.Nasim and Prof. Abu Syed already made visit to Pabna several times in April.

The Higher Secondary Certificate Examination started on the 27th. About seven thousand and five hundred examinees are expected to participate. In the Municipal area the Govt.Bulbul College, Pabna Women's College, Pabna College are accomodating the bulk examinees. This year Edward University College has no arrangement for the HSC Examinees.
Most probably the proposed Pabna Science and Technical University site will be at Lakhinathpur near the Pabna-Dhaka road. After the committee meeting held at the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Pabna it was proposed according to the Governmental news feed.
The Government has declared that Ataikula Region will be upgraded to Thana (administrative Unit)

The First May
Probably Krishnachura(Delonix Regia) symbolizes May here in this part of the
world. With her flamboyant red flowers, the global Mayday gets the regal reception from the nature. Here in Pabna the first May was observed properly. The local Transport labor Union, which is the largest representing union for the labors in this District, arranged rally, meeting discussion forum at the traffic point near the Radhanagar Bridge.
The Rabindra Sangeet Evening and the three day long workshop was concluded by presentation of musical evening at a community center near Banamali Inst.The well known
rabindra-singer Mr.Wahidul Huq was the dirigent in this evening. The performance shown by the young Pabnites deserves appreciation. The Jatiya Rabindra Sangeet Shommelan(The National Forum of Tagore Music),Pabna
sponsored and arranged this musical evening.
Bright sunshine at daytime was sometimes filled with shower of rain in the first few days. But the weather became clear after the 4th day, this helped the peasants to harvest the Boro rice from the
Crops field. This year the wheat and rice production has reached the record. But due to mismanagement in the procurement from the government's side has forced the peasants to sell at very low price to the middlemen.

This year Bera Bipin Bihari High School is celebrating her centenary ceremony on the 1st July 2000.It was 1899, a benevolent landlord established this school.

On the 8th May (25th Baishakh) the 139th Birth Anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore was observed in Pabna.Different organizations arranged daylong programmes. But a large number of Pabnites preferred to visit Shelidah (named after an English indigo planter Mr. Shelly,legend says he was very cruel) in person.Here from Pabna if you take rickshaw and follow the road beside Shitlai Estate House via Bangla Bazaar,you are just half way from Shelidah.By passing the
Padma(Ganges), and 2/3 Kilometers you are at Shelidah.
The Ruppur Atomic Energy Project will be 1200 Mega Watt. Formerly it was 600MW.the parliamentary committee on the science and technology has decided on the 9th may meeting.

Bangladesh Open University. Has its Pabna office in Atua, near the former Old Bridge over Ichamati.Formerly it was situated in the Shalgaria, NW part of the town.
After the first week of May, the daytime temperature increased up to 37-39 deg. Celsius while the humidity was about 90-94%.
According to the meteorological department a moderate thermal wave (hot wave) passed over entire country causing so uncomfortable high temperature situation.

Thermal wave minimized after the 16th midday. On the 17th evening the long expected rain shower came.
Pabna district, specially the North Eastern part (Bera region) of it is severely afflicted with arsenic contamination.The Govt.,Unicef and Community Hospital are working jointly to find out the cause,treat the patients and mitigate this catastrophe.
We are trying to gather more news and information on this topic and publish immediately on the Net.
Telephone and Electricity hazards increase significantly. Telephone owners have become tired of wrong number hazard in both outgoing and incoming calls. They are now waiting eagerly for the digitalization of the telephone exchange. Meanwhile the power load shedding due to the hot weather has made life uncomfortable.

Sports news: Ekata Sporting Club has won the championship in the 1st div. cricket league. Neemtala Crazy Club was the favorite in this league but could not show their expected skill ness against the
Ekata.Score: Ekata: 223 runs for 5 wickets in 46.5 overs, Neemtala: 219 runs for 7 wickets in 50
overs.
2nd. Div. cricket league started from the 10th May.34 clubs in 8 groups will play 63 matches.2match per day at the stadium.
A number of cricket matches are going on in the town just now, among them Sun
NCC, Raj2000 etc.can be named. In fact the enthusiasm for cricket has been accelerated after the last year’s performance of Bangladesh team against Pakistan.And football seems to be the second choice for the young would be players.
Table Tennis League started on the 12th May. The Pabna District Sports Authority is arranging this and the venue is the gymnasium near the Stadium. About 30 participants three different age groups-boys, men and veterans.
Pabnite Mr. Firoz Hussain Pakhi is one of the three national participants in the shooting in the Sydney Olympic 2000.
