Pabna Cyber Chronicle April 2000

Dear Reader,

From this month Pabna Cyber Chronicle is going to expand her news
coverage. Mr.S.M. Alam, the well-known Reporter and Photo Journalist, has
joined with us. As a reporter of a local dailies and Pabna reporter of a
National daily, Mr. Alam criss-crosses the entire District very often. We
believe his contribution will make PCC more interesting in future.

===================================================

April stands for transition-from the end to the beginning of our Bangla Year,
closing and opening of account book for the grass-root level trading
communities. It is a significant month for her scorching heat and long
daytime. However Kite flying festival, Ashura for the Muslims (this year),
Janmastomi, Charakpuja for the Hindu community and Yester for the Christian
community have made this month much more colorful.

In this part of the year the daytime temperature rises up to 35-38
deg.celcius.The small ponds, waterholes and lakes are about to be dried up.
Soon the scarcity of drinking water will be acute unless some rainfall very
soon. Although there is water in two big rivers here, rainwater can save the
poor farmers from extra irrigation cost. According to the water-resource
minister in the Parliament: Bangladesh has got twenty-nine thousand cusec
water from India in last 10 days in March. This was measured under Harding's
Bridge.Paksey, Pabna.

National handicap day was observed on the 5th April. The District
administration and the social-welfare department have arranged rally, cultural
activity and meeting.

The project to upgrade the Pabna Telephone Exchange from analogue to
digital is going on in full swing. A Chinese company named China national
Machinery Export and Import Corporation (CMEC) is responsible for this.

The two Historical Mohua trees in the Edward Campus are garnished with new
yellow-green leaves. Pabnites need to wait for their flower.

Unfortunately the Edwardians are experiencing a shameful affair. Someone in
the Elected Student’s Union forged the signature of the principal and drawn
around Taka five lacs from the Student Union's Account in the College Road
Agrani Bank.

The Women's College in Santhia has enjoyed her first anniversary on the 8th
April. And has got promise from the Governmental side to be affiliated by the
Government very soon.

Rent trees in the Old Christian burial ground and one in the Police-parade
ground are ornamented with their pink and off-white brush like flowers. Now
days in the daytime this parade ground is crowded with the young cricket
players and enthusiasts from GCI and Zilla School.

Madhurilata (Quisqualis indica, family: Combretaceae) is seen bloomed in front
of many villas, but the most carefully grown on the arch of the of Police
Super’s residence presents a unique look for the passer-by-s.

First Nor-Wester* stroke on the 11th started at 8pm,lasted for about one
hour. It was indeed devastating. Lot of huts was demolished. Fallen trees
were a common scene in the entire town. Up to 50 percent of mangos were
perished. On the day after the storm the bazaar was filled with the green
mangoes, which resulted the abrupt fall of its price.
The inhabitants of the town had to remain without power, water and
telephone for more than a day.
*(in Bangla Kal-boishakhi,this storm usually comes from the
North-West.Strikes particularly in the evennig after the very hot sunny
day.Followed sometimes by little rain)

The old and big rent tree just beside the Telephone building fell down.
Pabnites have lost their one of the Last-remaining Old friends.

The opposition called dawn-to-dusk strike on the 13th April observerd here
peacefully,no casualty was reported.

Two good news for the Pabnites

Number one
The Government has decided to establish a Science and Technological
University in Pabna. It will be implemented in the second half of the Next
five-year Plan. A Governmental body consisting
The district administrators, politicians, elites have visited the two proposed

The second Nor-Wester stoke on the 15th, at around 3pm and lasted for at
least one hour. It was followed by sufficient rain, which was expected
eagerly by the farmers.
Following days were rather cold in this middle April. Amazing, isn’t it?

The Proposed Bera River port
Foundation stone has laid by the Water Resource Minister
Mr.A.Razzak.Information State Minister Prof. Abu Syed was also present
there. Good news for the Pabnites as after the completion of BB Jamuna
Bridge, Pabna has lost the importance as it was-The gateway to the North
Bengal.
