December and January are filled with diverse social and cultural activities. Actually the wintertime Bangladesh is very much "Bangalee".Home and abroad, every bangalee knows what to do and what to taste in winter.Nevethless to say- Pitha(bangla word for cake?), sweets like nalen Gurer Sandesh,Tiler Khaja are the must in the wintertime delicacy list.

However for the primary level school children, there is no time to spare.Pabna Zilla school had the record number of applicants. While the other schools have their admission date in late of this month.

B>>Internet and WAP in Pabna

Bangladesh telephone board(BTTB),has started giving internet connection in different district towns.Jessore,Kushtia,Barisal have now got the facility.Pabna and Ishurdi will get this facility as well very soon. Application form is available at the local telephone office. By depositing BDT 2,000, one will get this service. However only four persons will be able to log in at a time from every district at local call charge,i.e.BDT 1.70 per minute.

Meanwhile the Grameen Phone has introduced their own WAP service.Under the GP coverage area, you will be able to browse, send/receive email for BDT 4 per minute. In Pabna the browsing speed is quite satisfactory. Anyway WAP has not yet been popular here although WAPable mobile phone sets are sold in reasonable price.

*For the better service and speedy download,www.pabna.net is shifting to a new host-server. This will come in validity from April 2002.The new IP address will be:216.73.103.57

*Hilary Ben,the state minister for International development of the British and Paul Akroyd of Norwegian Government visited the Ghu-ghu daha bil(marshy lowland ) at Santhia on the 16th January,2002.

*The admission test for class 3 children for the entrance in Pabna Zilla School was held on the 16th January. For the first time, the answer papers were checked by the examiners from Rajshahi.

*Mr.Debdut Ghosh Thakur,Chief reporter of the Anandabazar Potrika,Kolkata was on a courtesy visit in Pabna on the 14th Jan.2002.He met with the Daily Nirvor editors.

*On the second week of January, Telecommunication week was observed here. the subscribers in the town have got new telephone sets by returning their old one.

*The traffic island at the town's zero point will be finished soon. An almost full blossomed lotus will be seen after completion.

D>>Fairs and festivals

*The Crystal film society arranged a charity film festival on the 4,5 and 6th January at the Banamali Institute. Among the films-The Message(USA),Kanchanjangha(Satyajit Roy),Sraban Megher Din(Humayun Ahmed) attracted the mass most.30 thousand BDT from this show was donated to the acid-victims of the country.

Countryside cake festival Jan 02,2002 was broadcasted in the local cable tv network.

Like every year Eid Mela at Sreepur Dogachi 18-31st December attracted good number of Pabnites-both local and on eid vacation.

E>>Institute of Engineers Bangladesh Election held in Pabna sub-center

On the 10th January the annual IEB central,departmental and regional election was held at the local Water development board office premise. In Pabna about 150 graduate engineers are employed but yet only 45 are the members of the IEB.Here in the picture,Mr.Mamunar Rashid,webmaster of Pabna dot net,is casting his vote.

Obituary Notes:

Dr.Mohsin Ali Reza(Bayron),the emergency doctor at Pabna General Hospital,died in a motocycle accident near Paksey on the 23rd January,2002.He was 35,has wife and two daughters. Dr. Reza was a popular doctor in Pabna.

Educationist Principal Nizamuddin Ahmed(71),passed away at Dhaka.Mr.Nizamuddin was the founder principal of Pabna B-ed College(Bera-Ishurdi)

Mr.Tapan Kumar Dey,former Additional deputy magistrate of Pabna and general secretary of Banamali Institute, expired on the 12th December,2001 at Dhaka.
