Jackfruit(Artocarpus heterophyllus)
is the national fruit of Bangladesh.
Though not very known
in the western world,
this fruit is very popular
in the sub-continent.
A very interesting description
of this fruit was found in the
writings of the great Chinese
traveler Huen Tsang
(in the 7th century AD)
while he was visiting
Poundrabardhan(now Bogura)

A>>Introductory words

In the midst of monsoon rain and rising river water, Bangladesh is preparing herself for one more step towards democracy, that is the 8th national assembly election.However,according to the weather report, the risk for flood is not high this year.
	Like other festivals, the day/s of the national election is now regarded as folk festival in Bangladesh.Folkclothed in better clothes assemble at the polling booths. Small kids staying outside-purchasing paper toysballons,eating kadma,kulfi-malai,icecream while the elders are gossiping about the election result-this was the eye catching scenario of the last election. And the 4th October will hopefully present us the new folk festival indeed.

B>>Demand for upgrading Ishurdi to a district

The demand for making Isuhdi a full administrative district is becoming vocal. Situated at the communication hub-point,Ishurdi is an industrial, commercial and administrative center. Since 1979,the ishurdians are pledging for their demand, however due to weak local leadership and lack of governmental initiave,the process was not yet started until now when this can be an issue in the coming national election.
The proposed Ishurdi district will comprise of Bhangura,Chatmohar,Faridpur and a part of Atghoria-according to the Ishurdi Zila Bastabayan Committee.

C>>Miscellaneous News in short:

The domestic purpose Gas pipe line laying work is almost complete in the Pabna municipal area. And most probably Pabnites in the municipal area will be provided with this service in the year 2002. (09.7.2001)

The once famous four storied building of Bhabani Prosad Saha(popularly known as Char Tala) is again given back to its original owner, after an historical court verdict. Some people, by using false document, tried to get the ownership of this historical building, but after two decade's of judicial procedure, the court handed over this building to the government as none of the heirs of Late Bhabani Prosad Saha are alive. (05.7.2001)

Pabna Gopal Chandra Institute(GCI) Secondary School Certificate candidates have shown best performance(56%passed) in the district this year. From this year 2001,the grade system has introduced.(05.7.2001)

The WLL(wireless loop link ) installation work is going on in the Pabna Telephone Exchange. It costs about BDT25,000 to subscribe this type of telephone. And it will be very helpful in the remote village area where laying telephone line is not feasible and not under the cover of mobile network either.

D>>Ongoing and coming events:

*Tha deputy commissioner of Pabna ,Mr.Syed Hasinur Rahman has been transferred to ministry and the DC of Khagrachori will be replacing him. This is the part of reshufflings of administration done by the present caretaker-government. It can be mentioned here that the entire administrative setup in Pabna has also been reshuffled in July and August.

*On the 17th July the Daily Nirvor celebrated her 4th anniversary in publication

* The largest mobile telephone network,Grameen Phone started her service officially in Pabna town by opening sales center at the Abdul Hamid road.

*On the first of July,Pabna Municipality celebrated her 125th birth anniversary.

E>>Ishurdi to Kolkata direct by train

It will cost 12USD(about 700BDT) to reach Sealdah Main station,Kolkata.The test trains from and to Bangladesh have already been conducted. And within a month or two the regular passenger train will be started .The route will be Ishurdi-Darshana(Gede)-Ranaghat-Shialdaha.Actually this route will be extended to Dhaka in 2003.
The customs and immigration formalities on each side will be done at Darshana and supposed to take about 2 hours.

Obituary Notes:

Mr.Shafiur Rahman Khan Shafi(70),expired of heart failure at the Sohrwardi Hospital, Dhaka on the 31st July.He was a renowned journalist and the editor of the Ichamati, the first daily from Pabna.

Moulana Abdul Aziz(75),the former head Moulana of Pabna Zilla School passed away on the 7th July 2001.
Mr.Aziz was a very renowned teacher. His students are spread home and abroad. His eldest son is Dr.Monwarul Aziz,who first established examplerisk dental clinic in Pabna town.Moulana Aziz wrote a book named "Mokka Modinar Pathe Amar Oviggata".
His funeral prayer(namaz-e-janaja) was held at Zilla School comprise on the 8th afternoon prayer and was buried at Arifpur.(08.7.2001)

Mr.Wahab Uddin(60),games teacher and physics demonstrator of Edward University College died of liver cancer on 2nd July,2001 at Mirpur,Dhaka.After his funeral prayer at the Edward campus, he was buried at Arifpur graveyard on the 3rd July.
