Introductory words

December bears a special significance for the Bangalees all over the world.On the 16th December 1971 we achieved our liberation and recognition as an independent state of Bangladesh, as well as the right to use Bangla language officially.

The flag of Bangladesh was first hoisted in the UN September 1974. The Bangladesh flag appeared later in the UN's stamp series "Flag of the member state".

On the 10th April,1973 India Union published a stamp commemorating the inauguration of first Bangladesh Parliament on the heading-Jai bangla(long live Bangla).

Ramzan has started
On the 28th October started the holy month of Ramzan for the Muslims all over the world. Like other places in Bangladesh, in Pabna the preparation for Ramzan is spectacular in comparison with previous years. Probably due to the good harvest of Aman crops.
Roadside bazaars are filled with vendors preparing and selling Iftari.Sometimes it becomes difficult to proceed through the crowdy main road here in Pabna now.Pre-Iftari hours are full of hurry, air is filled with sweet-strong smell diverse food items. And the Eid-ul-fitr is not long away from now, daytime bazaar is becoming crowdy day by day. Actually the town is live almost round the clock-from 3-4am community volunteers are arranging rally with religious songs for awakening folk for Sehri-we have no time for sleep at all just now!

Miscellaneous News:

*Telephone department is carrying on digital cable laying work in the entire town.
*Diverse rally,meeting,seminar commemorating the great victory day are going on in the town everyday. The Information state minister Prof.Abu Syed in his weeklong stay in Pabna is attending these events.
*National Youth festival 2000 was observed on the 1st Dec. at Municipality Rashid Auditorium.

Paksey Road Bridge construction started

For better road communication between southwest- and northwest-ern part of the country, the Paksey road bridge construction is started primarily. The bridge is expected to be completed in 2003.and the bridge site is approximately near foreground of the right picture. In the distant background you can see the huge structure of the Harding's bridge. And Ishurdi Export Processing Zone(EPZ) is likely to be inaugurated soon by the Prime Minister in this month

Yellow-Green Landscape
Indigenous date tree (also known as Indian wine palm,Phoeix sylvestris,Khejur in Bangla) tops are seen with small clay made vessel hanging on the very top of the tree to collect the sweet juice. These vessels are placed in the evening and they are filled in the early morning.Molases is prepared from this juice which is used as an altenative to sugar in both coutryside and in urban areas of Bangladesh.

And yellow patches are seen here and there in the horizon-spread crop-fields. These are mustard and rapeseed plant field. And migratory birds are seen in very early morning flying over the town in V-formation towards the Padma(Ganges) and Jamuna(Brahmaputra) Char region.In fact a tour by aeroplane over the colorful landscape will be a pleasant experience indeed.

On going events
On the 9th December started a 5days long art exhibition of 58 renowned painters of the country at the Banamali Auditorium.This is the part of the mobile exhibition of the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy(official art academy).And the famous painter Prof.Hashem Khan of Dhaka Graphic Arts Institute was special guest.This exhibition is free for all and requires no entrance ticket.Meanwhile a drawing competition was arranged for the kids on the 8th at Durjoy Pabna Complex.

Preparation for the V-day,16th December
The main occasion takes place at the Pabna Stadium. Hoisting of the flag, march past, physical performance by different school pupils are among the events. School pupils have already started practicing in their respective school fields.Furnished with drums,bagpipes,flutes,bugles etc. scouts,girl-guides,cubs are passing time busily.

Sports
Badminton is a common game in winter.Young people are seen playing whole evening this game.Unplanned urbanization is squeezing place for playing this game in Pabna town as well as in other cities in Bangladesh.

And the 2nd division football league final match was postponed just after the start. Due to unfriendly situation in the match, the referee decided to keep the final match pending till new year.
