The life of a very respected person

Since the Mughal time the Pabna district was inhabited by the Hindus and the Muslims. The latter ranked the bulk of the downtrodden population.
The cultural, political and business elites of the district were hindus.
A thin section of the lower cast hindus were converted to Christianity during the British and Pakistani period and the process is still active.

During the partion of India in 1947 a bulk of rich hindus left Pabna.
In 1941 the British Imperial Police imprisoned a shephardic jew with the name Hakim Jan-Baksh Kabir in Pabna.
He was accused by the British Imperial Police for spying for the Germans in the Middle -East.
Some months later after his arrival in Pabna Jail from ME, he converted himself to Islam but not to Christianity. According to official documents,Hakim Jan-Baksh Kabir
received a monthly pension by the British Government a sum of 900 Rupiah.

He is still remembered as a very humble, generous, humane and sympathetic figure.
He opened gruel kitchen for the poor and hungry people of Pabna town in 1943.
Offically there is no Jew who lives in Pabna today.
