name is Belayet Hossain(born in 1903 at
Pabna) one of the first Bangali muslim physicians from Pabna. A brilliant student
of G.C.Institution.
Passed his matriculation with distiction in Geography in 1918. He obtained
his medical licentiate examination from Campbell“s Medical School,
Calcutta. He also qualified as the first post-graduate physician who obtained
DTM&H from All India Institute of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene in
Calcutta in 1936.
He was the convener of World Health Day 1952
observed in Pabna. He served as the Health officer of Pabna Municipalty
since 1955. He opened a charitable clinic at Char Ratanpur near Hemayetpur
in Pabna for poor people living around the Padma-Pabna area. In the late
fifties he served under the US -government agency operating in East
Pakistan called "Village Aid Institution and National Development and
Training Institution", a project aimed at improving primary health care
and education in East Pakistan, now called Bangladesh.
He had also contact with the legendary figure
Dr. Hope, man behind the ship-based hospital project Hope. The plan to launch such project
in the then East Bengal/East Pakistan could not be implemented because of
the volatile political situation in the late 40:ies and early 50:s.
Dr. Belayet Hossain laid his last breath 19th
June 1981 at his Sadhupara residence in Pabna, he was buried at Arifpur
graveyeard, located at the outskirt of Pabna town.
